Pragmatics is the study of how language is affected by context. Pragmatics is the way we use language to communicaterather than the structure of language. (Parker & Riley, 2010)
Why should teachers care about pragmatics?
Of all the aspects of language, pragmatics may be the most challenging for some students, particularly students whose first language is not English, students who have oral language processing difficulties, and students who have social or cognitive issues which affect interpersonal communication. Understanding the pragmatics of language relies extensively on interpersonal oral communication between the teacher and learner.
