Syntax is the study of phrases, clauses, and sentences. Syntax is a part of grammar along with semantics, morphology, and phonology. Syntax is better understood than other aspects of linguistics primarily due to the extensive work of Noam Chomsky. (Parker & Riley, 2010)
Why should teachers care about syntax?
In order for successful communication speakers and listeners need to use conventional grammatical formats.
Students need grammatical knowledge to become good readers and writers.
Grammatical processing is central to reading comprehension.
Students who have deficiencies in their grammatical knowledge and skills have later reading difficulties.
