Semantics is the study of the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. Semantics is technically part of grammar since it is the study of the internal structure of language.
Vocabulary knowledge strongly influences reading comprehension (Davis, 1944 as cited in Nagy & Scott, 2008).
Word learning is incremental. Children's knowledge of words is often initially incomplete, but gradually and over time approximates adult understandings.
