Teacher Language: To improve students’ oral and written language, teachers should model correct grammar and usage in speaking to students in all aspects of communication in the school setting. Using appropriately complex and varying sentence patterns also increases the students’ knowledge of and ability to use more sophisticated vocabulary and language.
Student Oral Language: Providing extensive opportunities for students to use language in academic settings with rich content will help develop students’ oral language and vocabulary. Encouraging controlled debates and opportunities for students to solve complex problems collaboratively enriches their oral discourse and vocabulary. Holding students to a high standard for correct grammar when speaking in class by recasting will help improve students’ sentence structure in reading and in writing.
