Grammatical knowledge comes from the ability to combine words and word endings in ways that allow for successful communication (Byrnes & Wasik, 2009). Classroom teachers should model usage of Standard American English (SAE) when interacting with students. Students will expand their vocabularies and have a better understanding of words if the teacher utilizes the proper affixes and provides exposure to rich, thick language in the classroom. If a student utilizes non-standard English or a dialect, the teacher should recast what the student has said rather than correct the student. It is important to acknowledge different cultures and dialects rather than make students feel the way they talk is wrong. Students should learn the language of the classroom, but the value of their culture and home language must be acknowledged also.
