Older students need the following for effective word analysis (Shiffler, 2010, October):
Layers of word information which includes individual sound-symbol matches, vowel/ syllable patterns, & meaning units (roots, affixes)
Overt and covert flexible strategies for analyzing complex words
Knowledge of word meaning(s
Carlisle (2010) adds that morphological instruction should:
Develop students’ ability to recognize and analyze the morphological structure of words through game-like activities including: breaking words into morphemes and finding common morphemes in words.
Provide instruction around the meanings of affixes and roots
Hone students’ ability to consider how constituent morphemes impact the meaning of a word; grow morphological “problem solvers”
Teach student morphological problem solving strategies so that they are able to effectively apply their knowledge of morphological structures to unfamiliar words that they encounter in text
